About Profit and Loss Statement Template

Profit and Loss Statement Template is a small website with one job: helping you put together a profit and loss statement that adds up. Everything on it is free, and nothing needs an account.

What the site offers

  • Thirteen downloadable templates in Excel, PDF and Word, from a one-page simple P&L to a 12-month layout, a lender-ready year to date statement, an income statement and a balance sheet. Every total in the Excel files is a formula.
  • A bank statement tool on the profit and loss statement template page that turns CSV files and PDF statements with selectable text into a finished P&L.
  • A fill-online form that adds up your figures as you type and downloads a filled PDF.
  • Guides and worked examples that explain each line, with made-up figures that always add up.

How the bank statement tool works

The tool runs inside your browser. When you add a file, your browser reads it on your own device; nothing is uploaded to us or to anyone else. A set of rules matches each transaction description to a category for the type of business you picked. Transfers between your own accounts, credit card payments, loan principal and owner draws are left out of the statement, because they are not income or expenses. Anything the rules cannot place with confidence is marked for you to check before you download the result.

The result is a cash basis statement: it counts money when it moved through your bank. If your books are kept on an accrual basis, treat it as a starting point.

What this site is not

It is not accounting, tax or legal advice, and the statements it helps you make are not audited. Check every figure before you sign or submit a statement. Some lenders require a statement prepared by an accountant, so ask yours before you start.
